At Table Mountain Turquoise we offer jewelry from a variety of artists. This feature highlights artist Mel Benally from Gallup, New Mexico.
Mel Benally was born in 1962 in the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Growing up, Mel raised sheep with his parents. At a young age he learned to weave wool blankets, so it was only natural that he developed an interest in art at an early age. At 18 years old, Benally enrolled in a jewelry making class at a local community college. This was a turning point in his life, as he discovered a passion for working with silver. He honed his skills over the years, experimenting with different techniques and materials until he developed his own unique style.
Benally draws inspiration from his Navajo heritage, incorporating traditional motifs and designs into his jewelry. His pieces often feature intricate silverwork, combined with bright blue turquoise stones. The combination of silver and turquoise is a hallmark of Navajo jewelry, and Benally has taken this classic style to new heights.
One of the key features of Benally's jewelry is his use of natural turquoise and white buffalo. He sources his stones from mines throughout the Southwest, carefully selecting each one for its color, texture, and character. This white buffalo ring is an exquisite display of his knack for selecting stones.
One of Benally's most exceptional pieces is a turquoise necklace called "Four Directions." This stunning piece features a central pendant with four turquoise stones, representing the four cardinal directions. The pendant is surrounded by intricate silverwork, creating a beautiful frame for the stones. The necklace itself is made of Navajo Pearls, each one handcrafted by Benally. The result is a piece of jewelry that is both striking and meaningful, representing the interconnectedness of all things.
At Table Mountain Turquoise, Benally's jewelry is showcased alongside the work of other Native American artists. The boutique is owned and operated by Caroline Lukens, who has a deep appreciation for Native American art and culture. She has curated a collection that offers a variety of genuine turquoise and sterling silver jewelry with unique styles, personality, and stories.
